5 ideas for original Instax Mini images

Are you looking to take original and eye-catching shots with your Instax Mini 9 or your Instax Fujifilm polaroid? Here are some guidelines to help you be more creative and boost your Instax Mini images.

Many tricks allow you to get off the beaten track to add a good dose of creativity to your Instax Mini photos. Follow the tips below to make great images.

The color filters

The filters are small colored plastic layers that clip onto the lens of your Instax Mini 9. The most common filters are those that tint your photos with a strong dominant color. These filters are generally found in batches of 4: yellow, red, blue, green. When using the red and blue filters, take into account that these two filters tend to darken the image. You should adjust the brightness accordingly by setting the camera one notch darker than the one indicated by the device. If, for example, the Sun & Cloud indicator lights up, set your Instax Mini 9 to the Cloud.

Play around to find out which filter is best for different kind of subjects. When you succeed, you’ll get stunning Instax photos.

Amazon also features interesting gradient filters. Only half of the lens is covered with a color that transitions smoothly to transparent. This allows you to apply a color to only half of the image to obtain, for example, a darker sky.

Other filters, plain or gradient, are available at Urban Outfitters. They are quite expensive but remain an excellent accessory for your Instax Mini 9.

Special films

The most common Instax Mini film is the standard Instax film with white edges. It is the cheapest of the Instax films available and a few tips can help you save a lot of money when you buy them. However, if you want to take original photos that will surprise your loved ones, consider trying other available films.
In addition to the classic Instax Mini Monochrome film (black and white), you can easily find Shiny Stars, Comics and Airmail films in stores. The latter is very suitable for excursions and trips, producing perfect souvenir photos and giving each image the appearance of a postcard. If you haven’t already done so, you should definitely try it.

Dozens or even hundreds of Instax Mini thematic films can easily be found on the Internet.

You can even go further creatively, with a plethora of limited edition films based on themes borrowed from the worlds of comics, cinema or animation movies, which are now flooding the market. Admittedly, we don’t see them often on the shelves of Fnac or other major chains, yet we find dozens of them on the web if we take the time to look around little bit. Some sites offer dozens of different versions.
Find editions to your liking and buy some refills, your images will certainly look fabulous.

The double exposure

Double exposure is a technique borrowed from analog photography consisting in taking two pictures on the same pose. The Instax Mini shot that you will obtain with this function will present two superimposed images, merged into one.

There are a few points to keep in mind to maximize the effect and make the most of your double exposures. The image being exposed twice, if the first one was overexposed, the second image will no longer have any space to express itself. The second shot always fills the dark areas left by the first one. You should also avoid capturing a subject that is too bright on your first shot, otherwise the second shot will hardly be noticeable over the first and the result will not be optimal.
A trick often used for its interesting results consists in shooting a person against the light, in order to obtain a silhouette standing out against a light background, then in second shot, shooting a landscape or a botanical pattern that will fill the silhouette, or the face.

Be careful, only select cameras which have a double exposure function. At Fujifilm, this feature is available on the Instax Mini 70 and 90 Neo classic models. However, the Instax Mini 8 and Instax Mini 9 do not have this feature. All instant cameras produced by Lomography (Lomo’Instant, Lomo’Instant Automat…) have an MX button that allows you to have fun with your creativity with multiple exposures. Be careful not to overuse it, however.

Stickers

Another way to personalize your photos is to highlight them with small decorative stickers. These small stickers can be placed over the edges and will instantly give more originality to a common photo. Select your best photos, and give them even more visual strength with an illustrated frame.
Various colorful stickers are available for sale on different websites. They are inexpensive and add an original touch to your images. If you want to customize even further, you can create your own stickers by measuring the dimensions of the Instax Mini format and cutting a custom frame from an adhesive surface.

Mix it all together!

Color filters, special films, double exposure… You learned a couple tricks that will help you create unordinary images. Nothing prevents you from combining several of them to be even more creative!

For example, using both filters AND special films guarantees you a good level of originality. Photographing complex architectures or desert landscapes with a red filter and Star Wars film can reinforce the impression that you have evolved in environments worthy of Jedis and other Sith lords.

When you are trying to create a double exposure, you can use a red or blue filter for the first shot. They are relatively dense and will keep the first image quite dark, including a few relatively dark areas. The second capture will contrast even better over the first one for a successful double exposure capture. Let’s be crazy! You could even try a double exposure with a different color filter for each shot.
