The Instax Mini 9
Entry level price and a great success

Attractive design, ease of use, low price… The Instax Mini 9 is a sure bet. With its selfie mirror and close-up lens, it will meet most expectations. It performs well when making portraits or in festive moments.
The only downside is the lack of control over the flash, and an exposure system that will not always be suitable for clumsy ones out there.
The Instax Mini 9 is positioned as the cheapest “polaroid” camera on the market, but in a majority of situations, it is more than enough to do the job.

The Instax Mini 70 and 90 Neo Classic are the premium models in Fujifilm’s Instax Mini range. More complete than the Instax Mini 9, they offer better flash control and different shooting modes. The 90 Neo Classic is the more functional of the two, but both are suitable for a more demanding photographer who wouldn’t be pleased with the Instax Mini 9’s lack of functions and automatic shooting.

Instax Square SQ20
The hybrid instant camera

The SQ20 symbolizes Fujifilm’s boldness and creativity. This device is a hybrid camera based on digital and analogue photography technologies which allows you to print pictures in a square format (Instax Square) after retouching and editing them. With its Instagram-inspired filters, cropping, contrast, and brightness adjustments….. this camera includes a wide range of tools to enhance your photos and positions itself as a unique model in the world of instant camera.
The grumpy purists will say that it’s not a real instant camera… Everyone else will be happy to have a camera that doesn’t print out failed pictures, but only those you choose. Pick your side.
Note: the SQ20 replaces the SQ10 and brings some new features, without completely burying the latter in terms of functionality.

With its LCD display and image editing functions before printing, the SQ20 is a hybrid instant camera that does nothing like any other. And it does it well.

Polaroid Originals’ OneStep 2
The return of the “real” Polaroid

Perhaps you recently heard about a Polaroid return and the launch of a new device which takes instant pictures the old-fashioned way? Well, the truth is more complicated, but we’re seeing the Polaroid name coming back to the forefront with the release of the OneStep 2, a device directly inspired by a model released forty years ago. For the occasion, a new generation of films is also being released, and is a little closer to the quality of the Polaroid images your parents are used to, which is not to be disliked.

"The Original is back". Polaroid Originals makes new with old and makes a noticeable comeback with the OneStep 2.

Other instant cameras to consider

This selection would not be complete without mentioning some outsiders. These models are not necessarily part of our favorites, but could still make you happy:

The Instax Wide (Fujifilm) and the Lomo’Instant Wide (Lomography)

The Instax Wide 300 and the Lomo’Instant Wide are two bulky devices that are less graceful than the Instax Mini. They are a little heavy too and not easy to tame. However, they are the only available options for people who love the Instax photo film but find the Mini format far too small.

The Lomo’Instant (Lomography)

Some would have expected Lomography to stop producing this model after the launch of the Lomo’Instant Automat, but it wasn’t the case. The two “cousin” devices each lead their own way. New versions of the Lomo’Instant have been developed so this model has a great variety of finishes. For those who appreciate the Lomo spirit but want a more flexible model than the Lomo’Instant Automat, the Lomo’Instant remains an option to consider.
There you go. We finished our tour of the best instant cameras on the market… or at least the most interesting ones.
If you feel that we missed one, or if you are surprised not to see a model in our selection, do not hesitate to let us know. We would be happy to fix that injustice or explain why we did not retain that model.
